Detailed Program

  • Day 1. Arrival to Florence, hotel accommodation.

Welcome to Florence – one of the world’s most beautiful and enchanting cities! After check-in the rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore the city.

  • Day 2. Full day tour in Florence.

The name of Florence derives from the latin word Florentia which means "blooming". Like the spring, the renaissance of nature, this city was the birthplace of Renaissance of Italian art.

Today our full day city tour will guide you through famous Uffizi Gallery, magnificent Duomo, Piazza della Signoria - which is now an outdoor art gallery with its statues including the replica of Michelangelo's David, the Basilica of Santa Croce - the burial place of Michelangelo and many other great figures of Italian history, Ponte Vecchio - the original medieval bridge across the River Arno with jewellers’ shops on it as it was many centuries ago, the convent of San Marco which houses the major collection of works by Fra Beato Angelico and other famous sites of this amazing city.

  • Day 3. Sightseeing tour to Siena and Monteriggioni

Cor magis tibi Sena pandit - Siena opens to you its heart more than the gates (the inscription on the gates of Porta Camollia of Siena).

Siena is a typical city of Early Italian Renaissance, famous Trecento. It’s one of few Italian cities where its ancient medieval appearance is preserved so well. Centuries passed by, but life inside the city walls did not lose its ancient grace and unhurried rhythm, as well as the people of Siena still keep their traditions and their famous "gentilezza del cuore" - kindness of the heart.

We suggest to try the typical senese dessert – 'panforte di Siena’, fabulous fruit and nut cake, which recipe dates back to the 13th century.

The guided walking tour of Siena is tracing the history of Siena through its gothic streets and squares. We will see Piazza del Campo (the site of the famous 600-year-old Palio horserace), the beautiful Duomo (with its numerous masterpieces works of art by Nicola Pisano, Domenico Ghirlandaio, its unique marble floor with labyrinth inlaid in the flooring).

Monteriggioni is a small medieval hilltop town, perched on a hill not far from Siena, surrounded by a circle of amazingly well preserved ancient walls and 14 towers.

When Dante Alighieri visited Monteriggioni its majestic towers evoked to him the ring of giants encircling the Infernal abyss in the “Divine Comedy”. Indeed impressive is the view of Monteriggioni city walls with majestic towers which are considered one of the best preserved in all of Italy.

In this small town everything has remained unchanged for centuries. Travel to fortress of Monteriggioni is real a step back in time. Just pass through the ancient gates and you will find yourself in Middle Ages, a distant past of about 600 years ago…

Because of its beauty and authencity, Monteriggioni became famous for tourists -- nowadays it is visited by some 70,000 people every year. Despite the visitors Monteriggioni well preserves the atmosphere of tranquility and unhurried old fashioned style of life.

Watching the sunset and magnificent views of rolling Tuscan hills from the walkway along the top of the intact medieval walls of Monteriggioni is an amazing experience.

  • Day 4. Full day sightseeing tour to Pisa and Lucca

After the breakfast we are going to explore two of the most famous and beautiful Tuscan cities - Pisa and Lucca. We will examine at firsthand its breath taking masterpieces of medieval art, among which is the world-famous Leaning Tower of Pisa, the intact Renaissance-era city walls of Lucca which became a pedestrian promenade.

Apart from known worldwide leaning tower, the city of Pisa contains many other masterpieces of medieval architecture. Squares, churches, museums, palaces and bridges across the River Arno make all together a beautiful architectural ensemble.

Lucca is famous for its intact medieval walls, being 12m wide they are used nowadays as a beautiful pedestrian promenade. Lucca is called also the city of 100 churches as there are many beautiful medieval churches in Lucca dating up to the 8th century, the mostly notable Cathedral of St Martin (Duomo di San Martino) with a mysterious labyrinth on the wall dated from the 12-th century which probably pre-dates the famous labyrinth of Chartres.

  • Day 5. Full day to Pienza, Montepulciano, Montalcino, Sant Antimo Abbey

We start our day with a tour to Montepulciano, which is situated in one of the most spectacular areas of Tuscany, on the border between valleys of Valdichiana and Val d'Orcia. This ancient town is built entirely on volcanic rock and stands about 600 meters above sea level. Like many Tuscan settlements, Montepulciano has Etruscan origins. Montepulciano is famous for its Renaissance buildings, its beautiful churches and especially for its “Vino Nobile” - noble wine.

Then we'll move to Pienza, recognized by UNESCO as a world cultural and natural patrimony. The city was rebuilt in the 15th century under the patronage of Pope Pius II, a Renaissance humanist who dreamed to transform the small village to the “ideal Renaissance city”.

Pienza is situated on the hill and from many points of the city you can admire a stunning panoramic view of the valley below. This Pienza's specific location in the centre of the Val d'Orcia, a beautiful and untouched valley, represents one of fundamental principles of humanistic architecture - the harmony between Man and Nature.

In half an hour drive through beautiful tuscan countryside we will reach the Romanesque monastery of Sant' Antimo, founded by Charlemagne in 781.

Then we take a walking tour of the medieval hill-town of Montalcino, famous for its wine. The tour can end with a tasting of famous Brunello wine accompanied by local cuisine. On the way back we will pass by the village of Torrenieri and will see the most beautiful landscapes of Val d’Orcia which has become the symbol the whole Tuscany.

  • Day 6. Full day tour to Arezzo, Cortona, convent Le Celle

After breakfast we depart for Arezzo.  Long time ago the city of Arezzo, set at the confluence of four valleys, was important Etruscan and Roman center. Time passed by, the Christian churches were built over the ruins of pagan temples, medieval mansions and the renaissance loggias adorned the face of the city… Arezzo keeps the heritage of all historical epochs; museums and churches of Arezzo have masterpieces of renaissance, medieval, roman and Etruscan art. In medieval church of San Francesco, Piero della Francesca painted his extraordinary masterpiece " The legend of the True Cross ".

After Arezzo we move to Cortona, known as the most ancient city of Tuscany, described in “Eneide" of Virgiliio as “mother of Troy and grandmother of Rome”. The city is situated on the border between Tuscany and Umbria on a 600 m high hill from where you can see amazing landscape of the valley below. We suggest you to go up to the highest point of the town, close to the Medici Fortress where you will see the breathtaking panorama of the city, of Valdichiana valley, Trasimeno lake and blue hills of Umbria.

Walking few kilometers from the center of Cortona, you will find yourself in a beautiful place, oasis of silence and peace: convent Le Celle, Francescan hermitage at the feet of Mountain Sant’Egidio. The stone monacal cells built on the slopes of the mountain seem like natural extension of the rock.

  • Day 7. Sightseeing tour to San Gimignano and Chianti, wine tasting

We start our day heading to San Gimignano, the "Medieval Manhattan", called so for its ancient towers. Through the centuries San Gimignano was able to preserve sixteen tall and narrow medieval towers which create a skyline reminding a modern city. This architectural wonder made San Gimignano known worldwide and declared by UNESCO a World Heritage site.

In the afternoon we will travel across Chianti, one of the most beautiful and enchanting areas of Tuscany, famous for its wine and its breathtaking landscapes with vineyards, olive groves, sunflower and red poppy fields. Wine of Chianti has been one of the first wines to be appreciated in America; Italian immigrants exported this wine there in the straw-covered flasks which have now become so famous and symbolize the Chianti all over the world. The tour will end by wine tasting at one of famous wine estate that produces Chianti Classico and olive oil.
