Savona,
the third largest town in Liguria, is a port and an industrial and
commercial centre of prime importance on the Western Riviera. The original
nucleus of the town is called Priamar, a fortification overlooking the sea
that already existed at the time of Liguria Sabatian tribe: it was later a
Roman and Byzantine stronghold and a Genoese fortress. Savona was the
capital of the Aleramo borderlands and, after 1000 AD, it flourished as a
port and market town because it was so close to the Cadibona mountain
pass. The mediaeval town within the walls was extended towards the sea and
the Letimbro River in the nineteenth century and further extended in the
following century. Worth seeing, besides the Priamar fortress, are the
Brandale Tower and mediaeval buildings, the cathedral of Santa Maria
Assunta and the art gallery.
