Arezzo

“Any talent I have is a result of the fine air of your town, Arezzo”
Michelangelo
Arezzo

Beautiful, tranquil and welcoming Arezzo has a strategic position to explore North and Central Tuscany, to visit Florence, Siena, Cortona, San Gimignano, Montepulciano, Pienza and other famous Tuscan cities of art.

Over the centuries, the land of Arezzo has given birth to many great men, artists, politicians and philosophers, most notably G.C. Mecenate, adviser to roman emperor Augustus and protector of artists; Arezzo was home to Renaissance artist Piero della Francesca, the greatest Italian liryc poet Francesco Petrarca, the humanist Leonardo Bruni, Michelangelo, the artist and historian Giorgio Vasari, Pietro Aretino, regarded as the best playwright of the 16-th century... It’s also the hometown of Roberto Benigni, director and star of the Oscar-winning movie "La Vita è Bella" ( "Life is Beautiful", 1997), who shot much of the film in Arezzo and in the surrounding countryside.

The city of Arezzo, set at the confluence of four valleys, was important Etruscan and Roman center. Time passed by, the Christian churches were built over the ruins of pagan temples, medieval mansions and the renaissance loggias adorned the face of the city…

Historical center of Arezzo is like a beautiful pearl in the shell of ancient city walls. Arezzo keeps the heritage of all historical epochs, museums and churches of Arezzo have masterpieces of Medieval, Roman and Etruscan art. In medieval church of San Francesco Piero della Francesca painted his extraordinary masterpiece The legend of the True Cross, a harmonious symphony of form and color by the great Renaissance master. In chirch of San Domenico you can see a famous Crusificion by young Cimabue (1265-1270). Extensive Etruscan collection is conserved in the Museo Archeologico housed in the former Olivetan monastery which in its turn was built over part of the Roman amphitheatre.

The main square of the city, Piazza Grande is very beautiful and very original: with its inclination (almost 10 meters of level's difference), surrounded with medieval authentic tower-houses (the most cute have the width of just two windows) and by Renaissance loggia constructed by Giorgio Vasari.

Piazza Grande provides the backdrop to the oldest and most famous Antiques Fair, which takes place on the first Sunday of the month and the preceding Saturday, and to the Giostra del Saracino, an amazing knight tournament which is revived twice yearly in June and September.
